This problem has been touched on here before. I had a clear failure of the Park/Neutral Switch on my 1985 Vanagon. I had noted for some time a delay or sluggness of the starter solenoid kicking in. Finally it failed completly to start. I took off the four screws holding the shift lever cover and we found, by wiggling the cable, that red switch wire connection were intermitent. After cleaning the connections and the slide switch contacts it worked fine. It has been posted here that the starter solenoid may hang up if the engine is hot. This didn't happen to me yet!

I also found there was no wiring diagram in my Bentley for the '85, though there was one for '86>; I presume they were similar.

Good thought to check; that was sure cheaper than a new starter!
