Central Ohio Westy/Van Club Spring Campout

The campout is an outcome of a successful first time VW Gathering last month in Columbus. At the Gathering we had fifteen Vans/campers show and we decided to plan a Spring campout to see if we want to make this a regular club.

This new club is not yet named but we are getting together for a weekend campout at Tar Hollow State Park (http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/tarhollw.htm) on April 20, 21, 22.

We have at least seven vans/campers from Dayton, Columbus and other cities. If you would like to join us for the weekend or just a day, please feel free to contact me
for times and directions.

I own a 1991 Vanagon Camper. I wondered if there are any other Camper owners in the St. Louis, Missouri area and if there are any gatherings or camp-outs for 2002.
Thanks Michele raecatol@swbell.net

Michele- Jim here (70 Westy) from Rolla, MO. There are several campouts by Missouri bus clubs. They all start the last weekend of April. It's below the dam at the Lake of the O. It's called the dam campout. It's at the Lazy K campground in Bagnel Mo. There is also a club called Groove located in Springfield they have a website. They have a Jamboree usually the first weekend of June in Springfield. All of these Missouri Rallies post in Hot VW's. There is one in Eureks Springs Arkansas. Mark Twain Lake Labor Day weekend and Oktoberfert in Hermann. Also we belong to Fullmoonbusclub they have a website. They are a great bunch of people. They have a campout In October in Birchtree Missouri. This will be the 2nd annual. Hope to see ya there. Jim jhen@rollanet.org

OKAY!!! Happy Campers:
On the above dates Central Ohio Westies will be at STROUDS RUN STATE PARK. It's a few miles East and North of Athens, OH. The group camping area is taken already, so we will be in the regular site area. See: www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/strouds.htm Looks like the park is on County Road 20 off Rt. 33 just North of Athens.

In checking with the park, "Cindy" said no problem with circling in this area. We just can't move the fire rings around. No hookups, no showers, pit toilets. The park is usually under-used in October, so she said we should have no problem with as many sites as needed. Two vehicles per site (with a max. of six souls) at $11 per site per night... self registration.

Already signed up are the Jeff & Kim, Jeff & Jenny (sans kids), and Stephen & Colleen (with Spencer)... Tom & Kathy and Chili Man Frank have responded that they will be with our COVVWC friends at Kelley's Island to the far North. COW opted to browse the early Fall pastures and hills in the originally scheduled Southeastern Ohio area and hopefully enjoy a bit warm October weather.

Friday night is, as always, optional. Saturday night will be our traditional pot luck dinner. We might want to do a "mini" Burrito or pancake breakfast if anyone is up to the task. I will bring an exterior stove and perhaps we could use another to do things right.

I have never been to the park... Greg Kessler at OU gave it a thumbs up. We will expect a good time no matter the weather. Perhaps we'll see some of our VW camper friends from across the Ohio River (?) as I am posting this to the Vanagon List and Westfalia Owners.

Sunday early afternoon we might want to do a caravan out for a little Fall colors touring before we split up and go our separate ways... we'll see. Jonathan... we'll follow you a while to make sure you can make it home .

So give me a note in response so that I can give the park a heads up on our numbers.

BTW, I will be culling the COW Membership list fairly soon... so if you haven't responded recently (like in a year)... you might want to do so. Or if you are reading this from another site and want to get our e-mailings respond and I'll add you to the list. This doesn't mean that you need to have shown your smiling face... just that you want to be on the mailing list.

Pack up the VW camper, Westy or van and come on out for the last COW campout of the year.

Cow will be meeting up for our third Winter Gathering at the end of March.

March 29 at High Banks Metro Park outside of Worthington OH. From I-270 take Rt. 23 North to the park. Look for COW signs (not piles).

We'll meet up around 11 am or so and talk VW for a few hoours and then repair to an eatery for a late lunch. We also plan to unviel our new COW logo so...
See you there.

There seems to be a real dearth of VW camping events here in the upper Midwest, so I was pleased to discover this new one. An email to the organizers garnered a prompt response with all the particulars, so here is more info:

Located less than an hour northwest of Milwaukee, this is primarily a Volkswagen show, with several categories for nearly all VWs from early Beetles and Campers to the latest watercooled models, with trophies awarded to category winners. But in addition, camping is offered on the grounds throughout the weekend, with a large group campfire, and an all-you-care-to-eat spaghetti dinner Saturday night. There will also be a VW Evening Cruise and live music afterwards.

As this is the "1st Annual" launch of this show, it's hard to predict the size of the event, but if the turnout is promising, the organizers seem eager to adapt the show categories, facilities, etc. for future events. So whether you're showing off your just-restored Karmann Ghia or just want a fun place to pop your Westy top for the weekend, all are welcome.

Please contact the organizers listed above for complete info/entry forms via email.

Hello fellow VW enthusiast,

Mark your calendar for this fall’s Buses By the Beach event September 19th-21st 2003 for camping canoeing/kayaking and Halloween activities at Grand Rogue Campground in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Buses By the Beach is a loosely assembled group of VW van lovers, and while we are based in the Grand Rapids, MI area, we draw VW folks from all over the country. We at "BBB" look to combine our love of Volkswagen style camping with raising money for The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and the Spectrum Health Regional Burn Center. While our premise is VW van camping we welcome other VW fans also whether you own a VW or not. So get up, get out and join us at our next event, it's a good time for a great cause.

We had so much fun at the spring event that many of you said that we should get together in the fall. The fine folks at Grand Rogue Campground have planned a weekend full of activities for the whole family for us. They have a Halloween theme weekend planned for all the kids and kids at heart. The activities include a costume contest, campsite decoration contest, bobbing for apples, pumpkin carving contest, French toast breakfast, weenie roast, train ride, and ghost story telling. We are also planning a two hour canoeing/kayaking trip down the scenic Grand River on Saturday. Make reservations early for the paddling trip because of limited number of boats.

The wonderful people at the Grand Rogue have generously offered to donate $5 per campsite per night to be applied to the matching grant foundation from XTRA Corp for the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors. www.phoenix-society.org

We will be posting a flyer as soon as it is completed on the web site so you can print them out and give them to your friends that might not have internet access (or stick them under windshield wipers of Volkswagens).

If you would like to make reservations click on the following link for a reservation form. Be sure to write on the form that you are with Buses By the Beach so they can group us all together. www.grandrogue.com

For those who have not visited our web site since we have updated it with pictures from the spring event should check it out at www.busesbythebeach.com It was a huge success with just under $2000 dollars raised for the Phoenix Society For Burn Survivors and the Spectrum Health Regional Burn Center in Grand Rapids, MI.

Tentative dates for upcoming events are Spring Car Show and Campout May 21st-23rd 2004, and the Fall Campout September 10th-12th 2004. More information will be coming on those events.

We very exited and cannot wait to see old friends again and meet new ones. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need more information.

Wishing you many “Miles of Smiles” in your VW!
