Default A new owner of an 1981 Westfalia vanagon

It seems in good condition but I am a bit nervous of possible breakdowns and being prepared for that possibility. Any suggestions.

Take it to a savvy VANAGON mechanic and have it checked it out from head to toe. Did the P.O. supply you with maintenance records. Were the fuel lines just replaced....are you running a synthetic motor oil...is it a stick or an automatic...are the tires rated for a Vanagon/Westy. Where are you located...

Hows-a-bout some more information from you.

If it has a water-cooled system, be careful to only use antifreeze with NO phosphate, half mixed with distilled water. You might have to have the system flushed before you do that. There is a flaw in the westy water jacket seal, that corrodes from phosphate, leading to a leaky headgasket, which leads to expensive repair. I love westy's! Good luck!

Howdy from San Antonio! I just purchased an 81 Vanagon and have spent the last three months replacing brakes, tires, rims, tune-up parts spart plugs......etc.... The van runs and shifts well for about a mile or two, then it seizes up and we have to pull over off the road.

What seizes up the motor or the transmission ? Can you describe what you mean by seize ??

By seize do you mean it just shuts itself off ? If so double check the Temp Sensor. Its part number 0280130012. That little $20.00 part causes lots of running issues and lots of headaches if its not operating properly.
