I would like to know r12 capacity for my 1986 westfalia camper. I just retrofited to R134 and did not know the amount needed.
I ordered a Bentley manual but is going to take until july to get to me.
Another question, are the controls for the hot water control valve easily misadjusted or maybe the controls fail.seems mighty hot under the das even after I set the controls to cold.
thanks for any help,
Rberto Munoz

I just converted my system in my '86 syncro (see posts in aftermarket a/c sytems. WE put in 2.25 lbs of 134. I believe that the system tag now calls for 2.4lbs.
Moderator Note: I had my system converted also. The charge capacity of R134a is 2.40 lb.

Thank you. It should be 85% of the r12 when refilled with r134. I come up with 2.16 pounds , but I just had 2 bourbons and coke. I estimated 32 ounces when I retrofited the system ..I guess I better evacuate it and recharged it with a couple more ounces of r134.
Thank you very much for the reply.
Have you had any problems with the hot water comtrol valve leaking or not shutting all the way ???
Roberto.
I've had no trouble. See the posts in hte heater section. My guess is that the cables are sticking together and acting as one.

It's been my experience no 2 Westy's take the same capacity -- that's a lot of lines and plumbing. The correct capacity is the one that gives the correct gauge readings AND the appropriate clearness in the sight glass. I find that seeing an occassional bubble or "eddy" in the glass is about best. Continuous foam is too low; totally clear with no changes is usually overcharged.
The official capacity for Vanagons is given in the TIPS forum, "Vanagon fluid capacities."
Well, today I received my Bentley manual...great book. Sorry I did not know I could order from here and help the list.
The specs found on freon capacity are as follows:
r12 1450 grams 50.75 ounces
At 85% less than the r12 charge
r134 1232.5 grams 43.14 onces 2.70 pounds
Mike , the days of charging with a can and looking at the receiver dryer sight glass are passed. Today we have recyclers and evacuating machines to protect the enviroment and charging to the exact 100th of a pound.
Icarus and Mike , thank you much for your replies.
Roberto Munoz.
