Engine lagging around 1700-2000rpm

When starting froma stop my 86 2.1 lags around 1700-2000 rpm. It will jump off the line then really struggle for power until 2500 rpm then takes right off again.
I know its not a 1/4 mile car but this is a definate loss of power until its out of that 2000 rpm range.
Any ideas what I should be looking at to solve this?

it may seem a little but do you still have a problem with this?if you still have i suggest that you go to the auto shop and get you car parts changed i know that they can fix it alright!
