    Default Starter diagnosis problem

Hi, I just purchased a 1984 Westy. Previous owner had a problem with the starter switch and hot wired a starter button to the ignition switch. I thought maybe the starter switch is defective and replaced it, but that didn't fix the problem. I can only start by using the hot wire. I turn the ignition on 'on' and hot wire between the large red and the black/red wire. Any ideas? Suggestions?

I pulled off the ignition switch plug. The two piggy backed wires go to a push button switch, when I turn the ignition on I can start by shorting the circuit between those wires. So my starter works fine, where is the problem?
