The freeway was dark. Wisps of sea mist obscured the moon. At 2 a.m. there wasn’t another car on Highway 101, the southern extension of the Pacific Coast Highway that traces the edge of the continent from Orange County in California almost to the Oregon border. On the left side of the road as I drove south, miles of tract housing reached into the hills. Somewhere on the right, between the guardrail and the great void of the Pacific, was the entrance to the San Elijo campground.

RoSPA Provides Fire, Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips for Summer Camping
“Rarely does a summer pass without reports of serious burns sustained during camping trips, and sadly we do hear about fatalities from fires that have ripped through tents or caravans, often accelerated due to the explosion of fuel canisters,” said Peter Cornall, RoSPA’s head of leisure safety.The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is reminding those going camping this summer to keep the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning at bay.
