Volkswagen Multivan Alltrack tackles chores on and off road

We’ve grown quite accustomed to rugged, 4WD trucks and SUVs over the years. At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen was determined to show a few different looks for all-wheel-powered vehicles with off-road intentions. It revealed a utility convertible in the T-ROC concept and also debuted the Multivan Alltrack concept, an AWD van for “all roads and any track.”

While the Multivan Alltrack is capable of rambling, hauling and overnighting far from the nearest road, Volkswagen doesn’t frame it specifically as an off-road vehicle. Instead, it’s a versatile cargo van, ready to do work anywhere and everywhere you need to go. In fact, Volkswagen uses a carefully selected mix of components and design elements to give the van a city-meets-backcountry presence. Continue reading »

Hitting the road in a VW camper

Cruising somewhere under the speed limit, we rounded a curve to find nothing but a painted line on the road separating us from the rugged coast and crashing waves below. The Pacific Coast Highway is not a place to drive quickly with its steep turns, hills and sections with no guardrail. That made our vintage blue and white Volkswagen Westfalia, dubbed Ala Lani by the rental company, the perfect choice.

Volkswagen Westfalia at Pinnacles National Park campground.

The chance to drive and live in a classic VW camper was the reason my girlfriend and I came to California. For years we’ve admired vintage Westfalias from afar and long fantasized about hitting the open road with the freedom to camp in comfort wherever we parked for the night. In our wildest dreams we own one, in reality we were very happy that we could rent one. Continue reading »

A company that customises VW campervans asked its employees to design their money-no-object, dream vehicle, and this is what they came up with.

A £55,000, state-of-the-art moving palace, with hidden Sony Bravia flatscreen TVs, rear-view camera, and ultra-high spec entertainment system.

The iconic VW Type 2 campervan has been customised by Bristol-based Danbury Motorcaravans, and costs twice the price of their average camper.

When seen on the road, this camper van does not look out of the ordinary.

However, its interior hides a very impressive and secretive design which can double its living space at the touch of a button.

The new invention transforms the T5 Doubleback into a 26ft long home on wheels.

Quite a lot of the materials are recycled, including the van itself, in a manner of speaking.

If you and your spouse were to quit your jobs in order to take a 1967 VW Microbus on an indefinite trip down the Pan-American highway, you might earn yourself some kind of a nickname. Continue reading »
